A smile can be a defining feature for a person. People with healthy teeth and gums smile more, and experience greater overall health benefits. If you want a beautiful and confident smile, follow a daily oral health routine, using these suggestions:
1. Brush Teeth – Dentists often recommend using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Squeeze a small amount of toothpaste on your brush and clean your teeth, gums, and tongue for at least two to three minutes. Use a gentle circular motion and make sure to care for the hard-to-reach areas in the mouth.
2. Rinse – Rinsing with alcohol free mouthwash is one of the best finishing touches to achieve fresh breath and to improve gum health. Sip a small amount, swish it for about 30 to 40 seconds and then spit into the sink.
If you eat anything acidic at breakfast (fruit, juice, etc.), it is recommended to wait 30 minutes before brushing teeth. (This applies to every meal.) Acid can temporarily soften enamel; brushing right after eating can cause erosion and weaken your teeth.
Since most people do not bring a toothbrush to the office, rinse and use dental floss or a small “pick” with floss to clean and remove food particles stuck in teeth after eating. These are effective ways to remove food particles and prevent plaque from building until you can brush.
1. Rinse – Swish with water and swallow or spit. This can remove some debris.
Your evening dental routine is basically the same as the morning — plus flossing or other tools used in between your teeth — to ensure there are no food particles stuck between teeth before you sleep. Floss, use a long strand of dental floss and wrap each end around your middle fingers. Gently insert the floss between your teeth and move back and forth in a sawing motion. To avoid damaging gums, floss in a “C-shape” around each tooth.
