Halitosis can be perceived as a “fancy” term for bad breath, but it is an actual medical condition. If you have one or more of bad breath symptoms, it is likely you can be diagnosed with halitosis. Keep an eye out for these behaviours or symptoms:
1. Smoking / Vaping
Cigarettes can be smelled from quite a distance. When the intense smoke is inhaled into your body, it is very hard to mask, creating an odour in the mouth and yellowing of teeth. Smoking also causes the mouth to dry.
2. Dry Mouth
When salivary glands aren’t performing up to their proper standards, bad breath will most likely occur. Sleeping with the mouth open and some medications (such as blood pressure drugs) can cause dry mouth (also known as cotton mouth). Dry mouth may lead to bleeding of gums and stinky breath.
3. Mouth Sores
Mouth sores can be a heavy burden to bear. They cause discomfort, pain, and bad breath. Mouth sores can simply be caused by dry mouth or biting your lip. They take a long time to heal. If you have mouth sores it’s always best to seek immediate professional dental care.
The lack of a proper oral hygiene regimen causes the food particles remain in the mouth and cause bacteria to multiply around the gums, tongue and teeth. This causes bad breath or halitosis if no immediate interventions are made. Keeping a regular tooth brushing schedule and the use of antibacterial mouth rinses should reduce oral bacteria.
